In short

What goes in the index.

  1. The heading — INDEX (or CONTENTS), centred at the top.
  2. Every part after the front page: the certificate, the acknowledgement, each section of your project and the bibliography.
  3. A page number for each — in its own column, or after a row of dots.
  4. Number your pages first, then fill in the index — or let Word fill it in.

Practical files often add a column for the date or the teacher’s signature — follow your teacher.

Change the page numbers to match your file. Pasted a table into Word as text? Select it and use Insert → Table → Convert Text to Table.

In Word

Let Word fill in the page numbers.

  1. Give each section title a heading style: select it, then Home → Styles → Heading 1.
  2. Put the cursor on the index page and choose References → Table of Contents → Automatic Table. Word lists every heading with its page number.
  3. Change the title “Contents” to INDEX if your school calls it that.
  4. Changed something? Right-click the index, then Update Field → Update entire table — the page numbers follow.

On your phone, or tired of fixing page numbers? Send your draft to Redrafty — the index comes back with the page numbers already filled in.

Tips

Do this. Skip that.

Do

  • List every part after the front page
  • Use the same titles as in the project
  • Check every page number before you print
  • Keep it to one page if you can

Don’t

  • Write the index before the pages are numbered
  • Number the front page if your teacher doesn’t want it
  • Leave out the bibliography
  • Mix two styles — table or dotted lines, pick one
FAQ

Questions? Answers.

Index or table of contents — what’s the difference?
In a school project file they are the same page: a list of the parts with their page numbers. Colleges usually call it the table of contents.
Do the certificate and acknowledgement go in the index?
Usually yes — everything after the front page. Some teachers want only the project itself listed; ask yours.
Why are the page numbers in my Word index wrong?
Word doesn’t update the index on its own. Right-click it and choose Update Field → Update entire table — or click in it and press F9.
What does “Error! Bookmark not defined” mean?
Word lost the place a line of the index points to — usually a heading that was deleted or retyped. Update the entire table; if the error stays, give that title its Heading style again and update once more.
Can I write the index by hand?
Many schools accept a handwritten or typed index — ask your teacher. If your project is typed in Word, let Word fill it in so the numbers stay right.
