Set up APA 7 in Word, step by step.

  1. Layout → Margins → Normal — 1″ on every side.
  2. Select everything with Ctrl+A, then Home → Font: Times New Roman, 12.
  3. Open the Home → Paragraph settings: line spacing Double, Before and After 0 pt, Special First line 0.5″.
  4. Insert → Page Number → Top of Page → Plain Number 3 — the number sits top right.
  5. Put the cursor before References and press Ctrl+Enter for a new page. Select the entries, sort them with Home → Sort, then set Special Hanging 0.5″.

Which fonts does APA 7 allow?
Any common, easy-to-read font: Times New Roman 12, Calibri 11, Arial 11, Georgia 11, Lucida Sans Unicode 10 and similar. Pick one and use it throughout — Redrafty flags a paper that mixes fonts.
Do APA student papers need a running head?
No. Since APA 7, student papers only need a page number in the top right corner — unless your instructor asks for a running head.
What goes on an APA title page?
The paper’s title in bold, your name, your department and college or university, the course number and name, your instructor and the due date — centred, with the page number top right.
How should the reference list look?
Start it on a new page with the heading References, bold and centred. Sort the entries A→Z by the first author’s surname, double-space them and give each a 0.5″ hanging indent.
Does it check my citations?
It checks that your (Author, year) citations and the reference list match — a source cited in the text but missing from the list gets flagged — and how the list is laid out. It doesn’t rewrite the entries themselves.
