  1. Layout → Size → A4, then Layout → Margins → Custom Margins: left 1.5″, the others 1″.
  2. Select everything with Ctrl+A, then set Times New Roman 12, line spacing 1.5, justified with Ctrl+J.
  3. Chapter titles: the Heading 1 style, 16 pt, bold, centred, with Font → All caps. Sections: Heading 2, 14 pt, bold.
  4. Insert → Page Number → Bottom of Page → Plain Number 2. For the front pages: Layout → Breaks → Next Page after them, then Format Page Numbers → i, ii, iii.
  5. References → Table of Contents → Automatic Table — it builds itself from your headings.

What is the standard thesis format in India?
Most universities ask for A4 paper, a 1.5″ left margin for binding and 1″ on the other sides, Times New Roman 12 at 1.5 line spacing, justified text, chapter headings in bold capitals, roman numbers (i, ii, iii) on the front pages and ordinary numbers from Chapter 1. Your university’s thesis manual always comes first.
What order do the front pages go in?
Usually: title page, certificate, declaration, acknowledgement, abstract, table of contents, and the lists of figures, tables and abbreviations. Then the chapters, references and appendices.
Is a dissertation formatted differently from a thesis?
In India the two words are often used for the same thing, and the page layout is the same. Check your university’s manual for its own name and order of parts.
My thesis is long. Will it work?
